From only 10 km our signalman’s lodging there is the famous “Targa Florio” circuit, a motoring competition that wound through fantastic scenery on the Madonie mountains and their beautiful villages. Celebrating historical re-enactments of cars and motorcycles, the fans of this race can spend a few days at our house organizing their stay during the event reminiscent of interest.
There are hundreds of passionate motorcyclists who, on saturdays and sundays, drive on the road of the old “Targa”, without missing a large lunch at high altitude.
The Targa Florio had 3 distinct circuits, the first one called the small one, 72 km long circuit. It crossed some small villages, among which Cerda is mentioned, legendary place in Sicily, both for the tribunes from which the race started, and for the cult of artichokes over the years this town has started up, even erecting a monument in central place, a must for lovers of dishes based on this plant.
The medium circuit of the “Targa Florio” includes the crossing of the municipality of Polizzi Generosa, a very nice village that offers pleasant scenery both during the “climb” and during the descent, and in August it is home to an interesting hazelnut festival.
Finally, the great “Targa Florio” circuit, which has the most beautiful landscapes and the best views thanks to the crossing of enchanting villages such as Castellana Sicula, Geraci, Castelbuono and the Petralie, it is suggested to go around carrying the travel bags, to buy and carry “prosciutto”, “salame” and tipical cheeses, to eat at the signalman’s lodging 59 + 866 once back on the seashore.
Castelbuono is absolutely not to be missed, a must for the tasting of various typical products of the area (honey, preserves, panettone and manna-based sweets) and for those who have the good fortune to take a trip in Sicily in autumn, in the same period of what to do in order to match your stay with the mushroom festival.
There are also many possible routes for those who love trekking and walking in the woods, starting from the Petralias, from Castelbuono, from Piano Zucchi and from Piano Battaglia (all places also recommended for mushroom lovers).
